Day 168: Flip Flops and Socks

Look. I understand that footwear without a top or sides is not meant to be worn with socks, but I don’t give a damn. It is comfortable. I’m not saying that I only wear flip flops with socks, but I am tired of the social stigma that surrounds people that do.

The design of flips flops offer the user the freedom of slipping them on and off quickly. They are essential for a day by the pool, the beach, or just around the house when you want to get the mail. (Crap, I have to go get the mail. BRB.) Okay. See, that was nice. I didn’t have to go get my shoes. I didn’t have to tie my shoes when I left or untie them when I came back. I simply slipped on my flip flops — with socks on — and went on my way.

During these times in the spring and fall is when socks serve the most purpose. Some days are warm and some are not. During those not so warm days, it is nice to have something to cover the feet. I am a function over fashion kind of person. I would rather wear something that will keep my feet warm than worry about the ridicule from family and friends or strangers.

But I will still wear socks with flip flops in the summer. Mind you, it is a matter of comfort and convenience. The two C’s of any great American piece of clothing. I don’t wear socks with flips flops to the beach. I don’t go on long trips with socks and flips flops. And only a fool would hike or run with flip flops.

I like my feet to be comfortable. The footwear with less material and is lightweight is the best kind, in my opinion, for getting around the house or going on short trips. Those are flip flops. Or nothing at all. I just wanted to set the record straight for anyone who disagrees or is afraid to admit that they also wear socks with flip flops. You are not alone. Long live the comfort!

Author’s Note #1: This opinion does not include the toe-thong flip flops. I hate those!

Author’s Note #2: This whole dilemma started when I owned a pair of Adidas flip flops. Where the foot rests was not solid. It was covered in little plastic “pegs” that actually hurt my feet when I walked. Instead of buying or asking for new ones, I simply wore socks to get rid of the pain.
