For a couple of weeks now, my name has been on a piece of paper that says that I am responsible for everything inside of a thousand square feet. A bank was kind enough not to put their name on the paper for thirty years. And for the past two weeks, I have been painting, pasting, cutting, and filling the grounds of one Z. Colston drive. I am not close to being done with all the revisions, but I was a lot closer than I was yesterday. It is much easier to do all the interior work while there is no furniture or much of anything else in the house, so tonight will be the first night that I sleep in a house that I will call home.

The work has been challenging, but it has been the type of work that can only make a person grow. For the past week, I have focused on one goal and that is to sleep in my house. For that to happen, three things needed to occur. First, I needed to finish painting the entirety of my room before I moved a bed in there. Check. Then I had to find a bed that I intended to sleep on for the next ten years. Pillow top and cooling core. Check. And then I had to find sheets, which proved the most time-consuming task of all three.

Kind of.

My mother and I went to three different stores that sold bedding. Maybe it’s the quarantine or maybe people think comforters and sheets are going to be as rare as toilet paper, but I could not find one set of comforter and sheets that matched the palette of my house. And I’m not married, so I didn’t have to settle for floral and sixteen pieces of bedding with four extra pillows that never get used. Eventually, I found a set online that is neutral colored and cheap enough to fits a bachelor’s needs.

There’s no A/C, but I got a fan. The sheets are on and it’s time to hit the lights. It was a wonderful day to make this Day 1. My mom painted basically an entire room while I worked on trim. My cousins stopped over for a few drinks and laughs. We planned a golf outing tomorrow, but only after the work is done. Of course. It must be a special club I fell into. Now, I get to chat and learn with other homeowners about what to do with these four walls. It’s definitely the start of a different kind of living. I like it. I could get used to it.
