Day 280: The Bricks of Our Lives

This post is a direct reference to Pink Floyd’s album, The Wall. In it, the bricks are a metaphor for the emotional blockage we build up over our lifetime as a defense mechanism. Most bricks are created by trauma and others can be created by continuous thoughts or feelings toward a subject or person.

What I like about this metaphor is that once the bricks are in place they are difficult to remove. A brick is sealed into the wall with mortar and our emotional bricks are glued to our subconscious. They don’t magically fall off or crumble. With time, some bricks can disintegrate. With weather, i.e. new experiences, the bricks can become fragile and easily broken. But if there is a weak brick at the base of the wall, it’s going to take a lot of work to get rid of it.

I attempt to self reflect without over-analyzing, and the brick metaphor has been a reminder that if there is a rotten brick at the base of the wall, it is going to cause the whole wall to be unstable. I don’t offer solutions because every person is different and some people may be wondering what the hell I am talking about. These are the observations of my life.

Even if we are lucky enough to be aware that there is a crack in the foundation, it is hard to fix that flaw. But that doesn’t mean that we can continuously work to remove one brick at a time. It’s a lifelong journey to the past. Eventually, I’ll find that brick and chuck it in the ocean.

Author’s Note #1: This is not the first time I have made a Pink Floyd reference and it won’t be the last.

Author’s Note #2: This is also not the first time I have used a cliche and it won’t be the last.

Author's Note #3: Perseverance wears down resistance.

Author's Note #4: That's a weird one.

Author’s Note #5: I want some ice cream.
