Day 350: A Momentary Lapse of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Since this blog won’t make it to Halloween, I suppose I should write it now. I thought of the title more of a play on the Pink Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason, but there is truth to it.
Every Halloween, Christmas, and Easter, I do as many other Americans do and I eat candy. It’s just the thing to do for the holidays. Similar to eating turkey or ham or that special stuffing you only get twice a year two months in a row.
But I am not a sweet person. Even as a child after treat-or-treating, I would have candy that sat around till Easter until my mom told me to throw it away. As an adult, I used to enjoy eating candy at the movie theater, but that doesn’t happen anymore. And the main reason isn’t because of COVID. It was my movie theater ritual to get a snack and support the theater in their overpriced slushies. My go-to snack was Raisnettes. Occasionally, I would get some Skittles or M & M’s, but not often. I stopped eating Skittles in the theater because of the rawness that developed on the side of my mouth after nearly eating the whole box a half-hour into the film. I still enjoy M & M’s, but Raisnettes just always sounded better.
But then I started getting the stomach aches. It may have been the combination of sweet chocolate, raisins, and sugar-covered shredded ice that caused the pains, but I never really pinpointed it. I blamed the Raisnettes the same way I blamed the Skittles. It was a disappointing day because it was the second time that it happened. I gave them another shot and they let me down again. So, I have been sticking to popcorn for the past several movie-going experiences.
Maybe my body just processes sugar in a different way, now. It’s not like I have overloaded my body with sweets my entire life. Albeit, there has been plenty of sugary drinks I consumed on a regular basis for the span of a decade. That includes pop and other liquids mixed with Red Bull. But that’s all beside the point.
Soon, I will have a craving for sugary treats. It already happened actually. A colleague keeps treats in her room. Normally, they were for the students, but now it is only teachers in the school. It took a couple of days of eye-balling the pile. Then one day I needed to take a mini Snickers and a pink Starbursts. They were fantastic desserts to complement my salad lunch.
The cravings won’t last long, luckily. I guess I have been blessed without a sweet tooth. I have more of a bread addiction. But soon, as the calendar clicks past the 31st I will crave another sweet food: Mom’s pumpkin roll.
Author's Note #1: Yes, I am aware that I didn't mention Reese's in the story. It was necessary for wordplay. But I do love Reese's Peanut Butter cups. I actually like Reese's Pieces more.
Author's Note #2: Trying to find a cover picture for this post got me craving an Almond Joy so bad!
