Day 44: My Favorite Pajamas Have Ripped!

It literally just happened. I was about to write something (I hadn’t decided yet) and I sit down in the chair, cross-legged, and I hear the rip. Devastation has encompassed my being. My favorite pajama pants are ripped, and it is right in the important area where there cannot be a hole.

Luckily, I do have a backup pair, but it won’t we the same. They are different colors. They feel different. They weigh different. These pants were the casual pants, the go-to pants on any occasion. They have just the right amount of warmth where I don’t get overheated at night, yet still stay comfortable in a slightly colder room.

But I don’t have to fret for long. In seventh grade, I was in a type of home skills class and we learned to sew. I actually sewed together a stuffed monkey that I still have. It looks like something from the original Winnie the Pooh collection, but I still enjoy my accomplishment. Truthfully, I have been sewing ever since. The pockets on my winter jacket both ripped and I have sewed them both. They are sturdier than ever. I sewed holes in shirts, pants, backpacks, and even socks that puppies got ahold of.

This is turning into a post about my sewing endeavors, so I’ll just stop there.

I will just sew my pajama pants. Crisis averted.

Really though, it is a good thing that things rip and break. It is good that we have to get rid of the things we love the most in the world. It teaches us not to attach ourselves to things that will inevitably not exist. We don’t have to identify ourselves by the things we have or the people that are in our lives. Or the things we have lost. It is hard losing people and pets because life holds much more value. But the lesson is still there. We can love when something or someone is here and we can still love when they are not. Even ripped pajamas.

Author’s Note #1: This is not a hint about how I need more pajama pants for Christmas. I do not need pajama pants. I have more pairs. Thank you.
