Day 45: It’s Better Than Good, It’s Done

My media college professor, Jim Gleason, coined (or borrowed) that phrase in his hay-days of news broadcasting when developing spots for evening news when the deadline was two minutes away. He then passed the words of wisdom along to his students at Delta College for several years as the head of the Electronic Media and Broadcasting department. Since then I have used the phrase often, and tonight is a perfect example.

I just turned it my final draft of my big project for this semester for my master’s program. Now, I could have been fine-combing through the twenty-nine pages for another hour or two. I could have worried about every word and every sentence, but much like these posts, it is better than good, it’s done.

Very few assignments, projects, or pieces of art are going to be perfect in the eyes of the creator. We are our worst critics. And that applies to many aspects of our lives. Eventually, we have to be okay turning in whatever has been created. There is a quote that goes something like, “A poem is never completed; it is only abandoned.” If we get too attached to perfection then nothing will be shared with the world.

There are also those pesky deadlines.

Albeit, we still want to get an A or produce something that is worth the effort we put forth. We want people to like our stuff! So, we should take care and time to carve away the wood chips and sand our sculpture. But if we whittle too much then we may only be left with a toothpick or we may put a dent in our already beautiful piece of pottery.

Anyways, I am glad that everything is submitted for this semester and I only have one more to go. I can’t wait to start my doctorate. Ha!
