Day 69: Oh, You Didn’t Know?

Today is the day that my cousins and I get to witness a live WWF WWE event: Friday Night Smackdown.

It has been our dream to see a live show since the days of Stone Cold, The Rock, DX, and Undertaker, to name a few. We knew that wrestling was fake, but it didn’t matter. The characters and the stories drew us in like any other good drama. Some ideas were ridiculous, but we still went along with it. It felt real enough to middle school boys that we even contemplated how “real” or fake the storylines were. Of course, it was all fake, but that didn’t matter. We became personally invested in the characters and the stories. I cannot explain the excitement of seeing the spotlight float across the WWF symbol silently every Monday night. The sound of glass shattering shot adrenaline through my veins as Stone Cold Steve Austin gave the crowd a middle finger while shotgunning two Busch Lights. I would roll around in laughter of the banter, quips, and jokes of The Rock and Jericho. I was amazed at the bravery and talent of the hardcore wrestlers like Mick Foley and the high flyers like the Hardy Boyz. The WWF was awesome!

Now, I have not watched wrestling since I was in high school, probably over fifteen years ago. But I still remain a fan of the sport and respect the wrestlers. I don’t really know any of the characters or understand the depth of the storylines, but I will still enjoy the shaking of the stadium as thousands of fans chant or boo to the whims of their favorite face or heel. Most of all, I will enjoy seeing the smiles and excitement on my cousins’ faces as that first bell rings.
