Day 7: The Great Turtle Race

Come one, come all to Mackinac Island’s Annual Great Turtle Race! The race where turtles from all over the world waddle and chug 8.2 miles for the first-place prize and the opportunity to live out their long and happy life.

Yes, we got box turtles, sea turtles, pond turtles, and even some snappers. Join us for the no-holds-barred race of their lifetime! Those scaled wonders will make their way around our beautiful island in the middle of Lake Huron. They will experience the luscious scenery of Michigan’s fall colors, a picture-perfect view of the Mackinac Bridge, and the opportunity to meet a few thousand hungry tourists.

Make your reservations early because this race is going to last a while. Day and night those turtles will be racing for their lives, speeding around the pavement at 50 thousandths of a mile per hour!

Prizes are award to the first ten turtles that finish and all others will get the luxury of experiencing their very own jacuzzi bath at our community potluck! Souvenir shells will be sold afterward for a low price of $20 each.

Entry fees are due before the start of the race. Additional soup bowls for family and friends are only $5.

Join us this year for Mackinac Island’s Great Turtle Race, where all turtles are a winner! And some are tastier than others!

Disclaimers: 1) No mallets will be allowed anywhere near the race. 2) Anyone wearing a Mario or Luigi costume will be ejected from the racing grounds. 3) Ninja Turtle costumes are accepted.

Author's Note #1: My friend Richard first told the story of the "Great Turtle Race" to a couple of tourists at the bar. They believed it for much longer than I expected. One of the best moments of my life.
